Privacy Policy
Last updated: 21 October 2026
This policy explains what Rates for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch does with your data. Rates is made by Serhii Surzhykov (“we”). It is free, with an optional Premium subscription or one-time purchase.
In short
- There is no account and no sign-in. Rates asks for nothing about you and cannot identify you.
- Your list and settings stay on your devices and in your own iCloud; price alerts stay on the device where you made them.
- A few services receive only what they need for one job: prices, logos, crash reports, anonymous usage statistics and purchases. Each is listed below.
- No advertising, no tracking across apps, no data sold.
What you create, and where it lives
Your list of currencies and quotes, your base and quote currencies, your settings, your price alerts and the last rates Rates downloaded are stored on your device.
If iCloud is on, your list, base and quote currencies and appearance settings sync through Apple iCloud (CloudKit private database) to your iPhone, iPad and Mac. That copy is in your Apple Account; we cannot see or read it. Price alerts are not synced; they stay on the device where you made them.
The Apple Watch app receives your list from your paired iPhone through Apple’s Watch connection. When the iPhone is out of reach, the watch requests rates itself, the same way the iPhone does.
Permissions
- Camera — only for the price scanner, with your permission. The picture is read on your device by Apple’s text recognition and is never saved, uploaded or sent anywhere; only the numbers read from it appear on screen.
- Photos and files — you pick a photo, image or PDF with the system picker. Rates sees only what you choose, not the rest of your library.
- Notifications — only if you set a price alert. Your device checks the price and shows the notification; there is no notification server. Each check is an ordinary Yahoo Finance request, as described below, and runs only while you have an active alert.
Rates does not use your location, contacts, calendar or microphone. Travel Suggestions are worked out from your device’s time zone, not your location.
What leaves your device, and to whom
None of these services receives your name, your e-mail, any picture you scanned or any amount you entered.
Yahoo Finance — rates and quotes
To show live rates, Rates, its Apple Watch app and complications, and its Siri actions request the currency codes and ticker symbols being priced (for example USDEUR=X or AAPL). When you search for a stock, the text you type is sent so Yahoo can return matches. No identifier of you or your device is attached; as with any internet request, Yahoo sees your IP address. See Yahoo’s privacy policy.
Financial Modeling Prep — company logos
Wherever Rates shows a stock, ETF or fund, in your list or while you browse and search, it fetches that company’s logo. The request contains only the ticker symbol; as with any internet request, the provider sees your IP address. The image is cached on your device. See their privacy policy.
TelemetryDeck — anonymous usage statistics
To see which features are used, Rates, its widgets and its Apple Watch app send anonymous signals, such as that the scanner was opened or onboarding finished. Values are coarse labels like a screen name, a currency code, a range such as “4–7”, or, for Travel Suggestions, the country you are in as worked out from the time zone; amounts you enter and prices you scan are never included. Each signal carries an identifier hashed on the device: on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch from Apple’s per-developer vendor identifier (not the Advertising Identifier), on Mac from a random ID made on first launch. It also carries the app version, device model, OS version, screen size, language, region, time zone and appearance settings, and for purchases the product, storefront country and currency. See TelemetryDeck’s privacy policy.
Sentry — crash reports
When Rates crashes, freezes or hits an error, a report is sent so it can be fixed: the error, the code location, the app version, the device model and the OS version. A small share of sessions also send anonymous performance timings, call stacks of the app’s own code, and Apple’s crash and hang diagnostics (MetricKit). No name, e-mail, IP address, screenshot, view hierarchy, on-screen text or network address is included; a random per-install identifier, unrelated to your Apple Account, groups reports from one device. The same reporting runs in the Apple Watch app, the widgets and the complications. Sentry processes reports in the European Union. See Sentry’s privacy policy.
RevenueCat — purchases
See Purchases below.
Purchases
Payments are handled entirely by Apple; payment details never reach us. Purchases are confirmed by Apple’s StoreKit on your device. RevenueCat is contacted when Rates starts and whenever it loads Premium prices, checks your subscription or restores a purchase. It receives a random anonymous ID, the App Store transaction and, as with any internet request, your IP address and basic device and app information, never your name or e-mail. See RevenueCat’s privacy policy and Apple’s.
What we never do
- We do not ask for your name, e-mail, phone number or address.
- We do not show advertising, and Rates contains no advertising SDKs.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites, and do not use the Advertising Identifier.
- We do not sell or rent data to anyone.
How long data is kept
We keep nothing that could be traced to you, because nothing identifying is collected. Usage statistics are kept by TelemetryDeck in aggregate. Crash reports are kept by Sentry for a limited period and then deleted. Data on your device stays until you delete the app.
Your choices and rights
- Turn off camera or notifications in Settings › Rates.
- Turn off iCloud sync in Settings › [your name] › iCloud.
- There is no switch for statistics and crash reports; deleting the app ends all collection.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, California or a place with similar law, you have the right to access, correct, export and erase your data and to object to its processing. Because nothing identifying is collected, there is normally nothing to look up, but you can always write to the address below and you will get an answer within 30 days.
Legal basis under the GDPR for anonymous statistics and crash reports: our legitimate interest in keeping the app working and improving it (Art. 6(1)(f)). For purchases: the performance of a contract.
Security
Your data is protected by your device passcode, Apple’s encryption of device and iCloud data, and your Apple Account security. Every network request uses an encrypted HTTPS connection.
Children
Rates is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone of any age.
Changes
This policy may change as the app changes. Each new version is published on this page with a new date.
